René Smith was born in Philadelphia and received her M.F.A. in Painting from Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and Rome and her B.A. in Painting from Bennington College in Vermont.  René Smith was a Visiting Lecturer in Painting at Chiang Mai University in Thailand in 2008 -09.  Her two person show with David Burke in Bangkok will open in July 2010, and she will give a lecture on her work at Burapha University in Thailand in July 2010. She has recently shown her work at The Chiang Mai University Art Museum in Thailand, Aljira Contemporary Art Center in New Jersey, Deiglan Gallery in Akureyri, Iceland, The Brooklyn Arts Council in New York, Project Diversity Queens at KoreaVillage in New York, and The Courthouse Gallery at Anthology Film Archives in New York.  She has attended residencies at the Gil-Society in Iceland and Vermont Studio Center, and has given lectures on her work at King Mungkut's Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Myndlistaskólinn á Akureyri in Iceland, and Eastern Oregon University in the U.S.   Her work was featured in the 2007 northeastern edition of New American Paintings and she is a recipient of a 2007 grant from The George Sugarman Foundation.  She lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
